How do our tide clocks work and how do you set them?
The greatest influence on tide movements around the earth is the moon which takes 27.32 days to complete a full orbit around the earth, so along with many other factors that impact the tidal movements around the globe this is the most predictable. Therefore our tide clock indicators do not go round the clock in 12 hours like a typical clock, instead taking 12 hours 25 minutes and 14 seconds. This length of time corresponds to the average time between 2 high tides and 2 low tides during the 27.32 days of a lunar orbit.
During this time there are many other influences on the tides, including the gravitational pull of the sun, the axis which the earth is revolving on (i.e. the season), wind and storms and the associated air pressure and the simple fact that the Earth is not exactly spherical. This means that tide clocks while keeping in time with the moons orbit will see some differences over the 28 day lunar cycle.
Your location is also important as due to all the factors mentioned above and other physical elements, such as the shape of the shoreline, small bays and estuaries which may alter the magnitude and the tide types you may see which are broken down into three, semidiurnal, mixed semidiurnal, and diurnal tides. Tide clocks are most effective when used in semidiurnal tidal areas (primarily on the Atlantic Coast), which experience two high and two low tides, approximately equal in size every lunar day. These areas are indicated with red highlights on the image in this post.
Given this, tide clocks can be set up at any high tide but ideally should be set up (or reset) at high tide during the full moon, and when done correctly usually any discrepancy during the lunar cycle will be less than 30 minutes and therefore will be unnoticeable. Typically, only four or five days each month will have a difference as great as an hour and the clocks may need occasional corrections which ideally should also be completed at high time on a full moon.
